I wish I could remember which podcast it was but there was a pretty good breakdown of the reasons nets get knocked off more often (and it wasn't that it's intentional).
A lot to do with goalie technique, once it gets knocked off it's more likely to happen again in the same game (snow in the hole), and more crashing the net because skaters *know* the net will give rather than kill them.
