 About 10 years ago Mattius Ohlund of Vancouver made a hit similar to that and Koivu of Minnesota came after Ohlund and Ohlund simply took his stick and nailed Koivu in the leg.  No penalty was called and it broke a bone in Koivu's leg and I'll bet Koivu never made that mistake again.
