I wonder if play-by-play use this to know the players on the ice. Maybe a version that has no advertising overlay, but does have player names/numbers on one of their displays and also a display without the extra information for replays and such.
I was wondering how they now all the player's names for a WJ team they don't see regularly. Even for NHL teams you can't possibly know all the players at a quick glance during a fast paced game. It's better than the Bob Cole "The Ottawa goalie", or "the Ottawa defenseman".
I have some insight for WJC, a friend used to prepare the document packs for the TSN broadcast team. (Look at the binders that Duthie and Bob McK have on the desk at intermission.)
They *might* have some kind of overlay but mostly they really do just study the rosters like cramming for a college final. They get most of the rosters shortly before the start of the tourney, all if they're lucky but there's usually some last-minute changes.
That's old school cramming for sure. I wonder if with technology now if some use the overlay of player numbers as you don't see player numbers from all the angles.
